Learn how to carve a mortar and pestle with Maine’s local stone.
Participants will learn how to use an angle grinder and diamond blade to “dish” a concave form into a small boulder, refine the surface with a hammer and chisel, and then smooth out the bowl with a grinding wheel and sanding pads. Techniques will be demonstrated for carving “feet” into the bottom of the mortar as well as for carving a custom pestle, though the advanced pestle technique may not be suitable for beginners. Using a worn natural stone that fits in the hand is a great alternative.
Everyone will go home with a hand-crafted stone object ready for use, along with the skills and acquaintance with the tooling to continue working on it should you so desire.
Tools, material, and safety equipment will be provided.
